TOP 5 BOOKS TO READING DURING A LOCKDOWN OR STAYCATION.

During these flip-flopping times of openings and closures, it feels like a never-ending cycle of déjà vu, doesn’t it? I’ve been grappling with this frustration here in Trinidad, but thankfully, I’ve found solace in my Kindle.

So, without further ado, here’s my meticulously curated list of the top 5 books that have been my saving grace during this lockdown madness. Honestly, narrowing it down to just 5 was a Herculean task—they’re all shining stars in my literary universe.

  1. THE HENNA ARTIST by Alka Joshi

My initiation into the world of book clubs couldn’t have been more enchanting. Alka Joshi’s masterpiece earns an effortless five stars from me. If you’ve ever yearned to immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of India, this is the book for you. It’s a journey through time, culture, and the indomitable spirit of a henna artist who breaks free from the shackles of an abusive marriage—an act unheard of in her era.

Savor the Flavor:
Alka Joshi’s narrative prowess is so vivid, you’ll swear you can taste the spices and feel the warmth of chai tea. But fair warning: this book comes with an insatiable craving for Indian cuisine. If you’re new to East Indian fare, start with something simple like Naan and Chai Tea (think of it as a flavorful adventure for your taste buds).

  1. WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens

Kya Clark, affectionately known as the “Marsh Girl,” navigates the harsh waters of life alone from a tender age. As a mother myself, my heart ached for this resilient young girl thrust into adulthood prematurely. Set in the evocative backdrop of North Carolina, Delia Owens weaves a tale that’s part love story, part mystery, and wholly captivating. And let me tell you, the ending—utterly satisfying!

Taste of the South:
Indulge in some classic Southern comfort food as you dive into this novel. Think homemade Fried Chicken with Gravy, accompanied by a side of Grits (if you can find them—I’m still on the hunt down here). Wash it down with a tall glass of Iced Tea for the full Southern experience.

  1. AMERICANAH by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Selected for our book club amidst the fervor of the Black Lives Matter movement, this gem by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie struck a chord with me. Her prose is like a warm embrace, drawing you into the rich tapestry of Nigerian culture while tackling the complexities of race and immigration. As a Caribbean immigrant in Canada, the themes hit close to home—highlighting the multifaceted nature of identity.

A Taste of Diversity:
Jollof Rice is the perfect culinary companion for this literary journey. Venture beyond your culinary comfort zone and explore the flavors of African cuisine. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not sample dishes from other cultures too? It’s a delicious way to broaden your horizons.

  1. IT ENDS WITH US by Colleen Hoover

This one had me glued to its pages, oscillating between moments of intense engagement and necessary emotional pauses. Colleen Hoover’s poignant tale delves into the intricacies of love, abuse, and the resilience of the human spirit. Through Lily’s journey, we confront uncomfortable truths about toxic relationships and the enduring power of love—even in its most tumultuous forms.

Comfort Cuisine:
For this emotionally charged read, nothing beats the soothing embrace of comfort food. Picture warm, gooey Chocolate Chip Cookies paired with a steaming mug of the finest Hot Chocolate you can find. And since it’s set in Boston, why not treat yourself to a Boston Cream Donut? It’s a culinary homage to Lily’s journey in the heart of the city.

  1. ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman

Ah, Eleanor—what a delightful mess you are! Gail Honeyman’s portrayal of loneliness and the yearning for connection struck a chord deep within me. Eleanor’s quirks and idiosyncrasies made her instantly endearing, reminding us all that we’re a little peculiar in our own ways. And amidst it all, the resounding message of kindness shines through—a beacon of hope in these trying times.

A Culinary Rendezvous:
While Eleanor might have her Vodka episodes (no judgment here), let’s opt for a more wholesome culinary experience. Treat yourself to your favorite Pasta with Pesto or indulge in a piping hot Pizza delivered straight to your door. Trust me, it’ll all make sense once you’ve delved into Eleanor’s world.

And there you have it—my top 5 companions during this rollercoaster of a lockdown. While there are countless more gems I’d love to recommend, let’s start with these literary treasures. After all, as I’ve discovered, fiction has a remarkable way of transporting us, comforting us, and reminding us that we’re never truly alone in our journeys.

Happy reading, fellow bookworms! And remember, whether you’re diving into heavy tomes or light-hearted tales, may each page turn bring you solace and joy.
